I wanted to let everyone know the book club book for January in case you wanted to put a hold on it or maybe ask Santa for it (ha ha ha!) The book I have chosen is called "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak.It looks like you can order it from amazon in paper back for abt $10 there are also SEVERAL copies at the Library. You may want to put a hold on it now though as it looks like it was checked out for the most part. The following is a summary of the book...hope you enjoy! I am actually really excited to be able to host, I haven't been able to make it to a ton of the meetings but I have read all of the books!

It’s just a small story really, about among other things: a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. . . .

Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak’s groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can’t resist–books. With the help of her accordion-playing foster father, she learns to read and shares her stolen books with her neighbors during bombing raids as well as with the Jewish man hidden in her basement before he is marched to Dachau.

This is an unforgettable story about the ability of books to feed the soul.

November

I wanted to announce our November book and date. I have been debating over which book to use. So I decided to go a completely different route and read some short stories this month.  My thought is that small snippets of literature can fit between all the craziness of the holidays.  As an added bonus, I have linked the text of each of these short stories to this email.  This means that you don’t have to go to the library, but can link and read. Additionally, all of these short stories are all under 5 pages.

I am planning to host book club on November 30th at 7:00 pm at my house. Please come ready to share your favorite and your most brilliant insights!

The book I chose for Sept. is Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See. I haven't read it but it sounds interesting. There are a lot of copies in the Library system. Costco sells the book for about $7 or $8. 

Summary of the book:


In nineteenth century China, in a remote Hunan county, a girl named Lily, at the tender age of seven, is paired with a laotong, or "old same," in an emotional match that will last a lifetime. The "laotong, Snow Flower, introduces herself by sending Lily a silk fan on which she has written a poem in nu shu, a unique language that Chinese women created in order to communicate in secret, away from the influence of men. As the years pass, Lily and Snow Flower send messages on the fan and compose stories on handkerchiefs, reaching out of isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. They both endure the agony of footbinding and together reflect upon their arranged marriages, shared loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. But when a misunderstanding arises, their friendship threatens to tear apart.

August Book Club

Hello 'Book Club Ladies'--

I have chosen a super good historical fiction book for the month of August..........'Fire of the Covenant'.......it is the story of those handcart pioneers and their exodus to the Salt Lake Valley. Author Gerald N. Lund has used the same techniques present in The Work and the Glory series to blend fictional characters into the tapestry of actual historical events, making this a story filled with all the elements of great drama — tragedy, triumph, pathos, courage, sacrifice, surrender and faith.'  ( I copied that)

The book is a little long but we have two months to read.  It also might be harder to find because I know with many people going on trek it is popular right now.  Last night at book club there were quite a few girls who could get extra copies from family, so if you can't find it let us know.  It will be fun to know the stories that the youth are talking about while they prepare and go on the pioneer trek.  It is both bitter and sweet but oh so good.
Plan on August 25th at my house.

June Book Club

I am hosting in June and I want to do the book Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte.  I know some of you have probably read it already, but if your like me, then it's been a while.  I read it in college - freshman year.  Also, for those of you reading on a kindle, or kindle app, it's free!!  I can't find my e-mail to set all this up on the book blog.  But I just thought I would let you all know so you can be prepared. 


I am going to tentatively set the date for June 23 at 7:00 p.m.  Let me know if that is a conflict for any of you.

May Book Club

I've decided to go with the book 'The Help' by Kathryn Stockett. I absolutely LOVE this book and am hoping that not too many of you have already read it, and if so, it's worth reading twice:) It's a story about racial integration in the segregated South and it has such great characters that captivate you and gives you such a vivid picture of how things were back then.

Let's plan for Thursday, May 19th @ 7:00 p.m. and if that's a huge conflict for many of you, I'm super flexible and can switch it up if we need to.

April Book Club

I have decided to host the book "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls for book club this month.

This is one of my all-time favorite books! It is the memoir of a women who had a completely crazy upbringing, but still managed to succeed in life despite the odds.

Book Club will be held at 7:00 on Thursday the 21st.

A change for March Book Club

A little change of plans for Book Club.  I've decided to choose the book...

"Faith Behind the Fences" by Kelly Dispirito Taylor

This is my sister-in-law's first book!!  It's a fabulous story about Hanny and her life in a Japanese concentration camp.  

There will be a lot to discuss about the book.  I'm going to get my sister-in-law on the phone so we can ask her some questions and she can give us some insights about what we read.

There is going to be a special about Hanny in between Conference sessions in April.  I think it would be great if you could read the story before seeing the special. 

We will still discuss "Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt."  Sorry I'm doing 2 books!  But I want everyone to read Hanny's story before seeing her on tv!

Email me if you want to borrow a copy of the book.  I bought a bunch so we can pass them around.  Or purchase it at Seagull for $12.00.

March Book Club

I'll be hosting book club next month and am choosing the book, "Saving CeeCee Honeycutt" by Beth Hoffman.  Please reserve your book at the library asap.  It looks like there are plenty of books, but a few holds.

I have not read the book, but have heard great reviews from a few people.  I'm excited to read it!!
